Out of control lift of Santos' Sinbad platform off WA 5 July 2021 could have killed workers
The topsides were being removed from Santos' 30-year old Sinbad platform off WA on 5 July 2021 when things went seriously wrong.
Watch the orange-clad workers on the side of the monopod supporting the platform topsides.
As the topsides begins to move a shower of dropped objects fall into the sea, fortunately missing the workers. One worker has to clamber and duck to avoid a metal cable.
The topsides swings towards the vessel, and then away, breaking a cable and sending the cable and a heavy metal object shooting towards the vessel and hitting it. This happens again on the next swing. The crew on the vessel were endangered, not just the rope access technicians on the platform.

It's a great solution to a lot of offshore construction challenges. Whether it’s the decommissioning of abandoned assets, the installation of offshore foundations or installation of new platforms and substations, HLC 295000 Liebherr crane will not let you down.
The HLC series and the expansion of the heavy-duty crane range are firmly anchored in Liebherr's strategy, not least because of the energy transition. In order to ensure a sustainable energy supply for present and future generations, significantly more and larger offshore wind turbines are being built. For the construction of these modern wind turbines, the lifting height of the HLC 295000 is a decisive factor.
In addition, there is a trend toward decommissioning disused offshore oil and gas platforms. This involves dismantling large and heavy parts on the open sea - an important task for Liebherr's new HLC series, which it can handle thanks to its lifting capacities. By dismantling the old and building up the new energy, the HLC series can promote the energy transition "at both ends of development" for a more sustainable future.
